DSM NeoResins

Wilmington, MA

DSM NeoResins is a leading worldwide supplier of innovative, environmentally-friendly, waterbased resins for the coatings and graphic arts industries. From 1996-2006, DSM NeoResins has fallen below Massachusetts TURA reporting thresholds for twelve chemicals. For 2005 TURA/SARA reporting, half of the remaining ten reportable chemicals had total releases to the environment of less than 500 lbs, making the facility eligible to file a two page Form A in lieu of the five page Form R. Efforts are underway to find an environmentally acceptable substitute for n-Methyl Pyrrolidone, used in products and for equipment cleaning.

DSM NeoResins

Frankfort, IN

This facility is currently evaluating a biofilter to replace its thermal oxidizer, in order to reduce natural gas use and greenhouse gas emissions. Potential annual fuel savings exceed $100,000 annually. Low process air emissions have allowed the company to opt out of a Federal Title V air permit (FESOP) and request the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to revoke its Minor Source Operating Air Permit (MSOP) and allow operation under Permit-By-Rule. Chemicals used for reactor cleaning have been eliminated and high pressure water is used instead.

TDF Metal Finishing

Lynn, MA

From 2002-2006, primary materials used by this metal finishing facility have dropped 60% while production has increased 30% during same time period. Below is a table showing reportable chemical use in pounds. This facility is now under the threshold for Massachusetts TURA fees, reporting, and planning.

Acton Metal Processing Corp.

Waltham, MA

From 1993-2006, primary materials used by this metal finishing facility have dropped by 59% while production has significantly increased. Water consumption has dropped 30% during same time period. Below is a table showing reportable chemical use in pounds. $94,000 in chemical and water savings have been realized through the practice of pollution prevention.

Madison Cable Corporation

Worcester, MA

Tyco Electronics/Madison Cable, a division of Tyco Electronics Corporation, is the world's leading provider of engineered cable solutions serving the high-technology industries. Madison provides engineered cable applications and solutions for the data, voice, video, networking, computer I/O & storage, medical & imaging, telecommunications, power and industrial/commercial industries.

Using pollution prevention techniques of input substitution, product reformulation, and recycling, a 17 ton per year (TPY) drop in hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was achieved. The facility withdrew their federal Title V air permit application and now operates as a minor source of air emissions (8 tons per year). Lead, cadmium, and chromium have been removed from band marking inks. Extruded striped wires have eliminated the need for ink band marking in some cases.

Through recent development efforts, Madison now offers customers lead and heavy metal free cable products.

Finding non-RoHS [Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment European Directive (2002/95/EC)], safe flame retardants for cables is a current goal for Madison. Working with Underwriter Labs, the company has submitted reformulated products for flame testing. UL/CSA certification for these items is expected in the very near future. Currently 30-40% of Madison's products are RoHS compliant.
